March For Our Lives Activists Distraught by Continued Wave of Shootings From Philadelphia to Oakland CA, but Remain Undeterred in the Fight to Pass Meaningful Gun Safety Policies
Shootings continue to be the backdrop of life in America, while a majority of young adults support gun control measures ahead of the midterm elections
New York, NY – After back-to-back shootings gained national attention, and dozens more people lost their lives to gun violence in communities across the country, March For Our Lives had the following comment:
“Gun violence is an everyday tragedy. As we move further from the horrific mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde that jolted Americans out of their comfort zone and into the streets to march, too many Americans are still being hurt and killed. Even when the cameras turn away and the rage tweets slow down, our commitment is for the long haul. We are fighting for a society that is better than this, and we won’t quit until we create a safe future.”
Just this weekend, the U.S. surpassed 500 mass shootings for the year, making 2022 the third year in a row that our country has hit this grim milestone, according to the Gun Violence Archive. At the same time, the vast majority of young adults support measures to curb this epidemic. A recently released poll commissioned by American University’s Sine Institute and conducted by YouGov found that 62 percent of survey respondents ages 18-34 believe that we would be safer with fewer guns in our communities. Similarly, Project Unloaded published a survey finding that the majority of young people, (51%), said gun violence is an important problem–bigger than climate change or abortion.
At the second March For Our Lives in D.C. on June 11, we declared that this time would be different. We continue to believe that public sentiment shows we’re on the precipice of change never before experienced in our lifetime, and are ready to usher in a new era of safety.
